The 12 Tools of Christmas continues! Check out past days for additional ideas Day 1: The Leatherman, Day 2: Flashlights. Today's tool is an iconic tool, and one where bigger is not always better.
Day 3: Hammers

When the word "tool" is spoken, most people probably picture a hammer. It is the quintessential tool for home repairs, and no toolbox is complete without one. However, bigger is not always better. When choosing a hammer you need to consider hand size and strength along with the typical jobs for which the hammer will be used. Obviously, a sledge hammer is not a good choice for hanging a frame. For simplicity we are only looking at claw hammers today. Plus, if a tool is too big or small for you, you will not use it as often or as safely. So consider the owner when buying this tool!
The Original Pink Box 12 oz Claw Hammer - This is the most essential hammer to own. It is light enough and small enough to be comfortable for every day use. We actually could no longer read the brand we own because ours has been used so much. In fact, we can trace back at least 17 years of owning this same tool. The fiberglass neck is great, it is more durable than most wooden handles, and it has a nice shock absorption. For basic needs like picture/shelf hanging, minor repairs, building small projects, this hammer is perfect. We also like how economic this brand is.
Fixman 12 oz Claw Hammer - Guys, if you just can't stomach the thought of a pink tool, here is the non-pink version. It is slightly more expensive, but otherwise would have all the same benefits as mentioned above.
Vaughan 19 oz Framing Hammer - This hammer is fantastic for large jobs such as framing, fence repair, driving stakes into the ground, general demo work, etc. Truth be told, it's probably a bit of an overkill for most around-the-home uses. This model has a metal neck, which makes it very difficult to break. And trust me, I have done some serious demo work with this guy without problems. Being slightly heavier and longer, it has higher impact for nail driving than a standard hammer, but it also makes it a little more cumbersome in the toolbox. If you're not sure whether or not you need this large a hammer, you probably don't!

It's great that the Vaughan 19 oz framing hammer is ideal for large jobs like fence repair. Unfortunately, my hammer is pretty worn out after years of use. Perhaps I should look into some tool repair to get it taken care of.
