Ratcheting Things Up A Notch

Another day brings another tool. Day 7 of our 12 Tools of Christmas can be a little intimidating at first because of the number of individual pieces, but don't worry, you don't use all of them at once!
The basic socket set, also called a mechanics tools set because of its helpfulness with car repairs, is incredibly useful for the average home owner. Basic wrenches can be used for the same purposes, however the ratcheting mechanism greatly reduces fatigue on repetitive turning and allows for greater motion in confined areas. The number of sockets is due to the variation in sizes of nuts and bolts used, some are metric (measured in millimeters) and some are standard (measured in fraction of an inch). It can take a few tries to figure out the correct size, so keeping everything neatly organized is a must. One of our favorite sets is made by one of our favorite brands, Craftsman.
Craftsman Mechanics Tool Set - We actually have the 60 piece version of this set, but this was the closest one we could find currently available. If you go to the store you will see hundreds of variations on number of sockets, types of additional specialty wrenches, and all sorts of other extras. Don't get overwhelmed, for most average homes a small to medium sized set (like this 58 piece one) will work great.

These socket sets are perfect for basic car maintenance, putting together kids' toys, furniture, or repairs in tight spaces like your attic pull down stairs. The storage case is a huge benefit for organization. I leave my set in it's case inside my toolbox in an effort to keep things organized. Craftsman carries a life-time warranty on this socket set, so if one of the sockets break you can have it replaced for free! We have used this warranty a few times, it's nice!
We tend to be a little on the over-prepared side when it comes to tools, so we have a set in each car and one at home. Plus we have a few random jumbled up sets which are almost too frustrating to use. While it might seem redundant, when you need a socket wrench there is really no good substitution.
